A Hanseatic who loves design

Jan Philippi, a foreign trade merchant from Hamburg, has long had a preference for clear forms. But first he had to deal with the distribution of hi-fi equipment in a Hanseatic trading house. He quickly discovered that some of these products truly disappointed him: they bore no design claim whatsoever. Jan Philippi tried to improve and beautify something here, because Hifi systems, he said, can also look good.

At the end of the 1980s, demand for consumer goods increased in Germany and Jan Philippi traveled to many countries on behalf of the company, where he established contacts with competent companies. However, at that time mass instead of class was in demand – a trend that he, as a friend of quality products, did not want to follow. Disappointed by the taste of the times, he found a courageous solution: the path to self-employment.

Two stores and one ideal

In 1992 Jan Philippi opened two retail stores in Hamburg and stocked them with goods that came close to his ideal of simple, clear and modern design items. With fresh ideas, inspiration from many travels and an unerring sense for good design, he tracked down companies that were able to turn his design visions into reality. Inspired by this progress, he soon ventured from retail to wholesale.

As the creative head of the company, Jan Philippi has been inspiring his designers ever since, working with them on designs with precision and attention to detail until they were ready for the market. He was particularly interested in promoting young designers. This has remained the case to this day: The boss still supports young talents and attaches great importance to a good cooperation with creative people as well as manufacturers. He still intensively experiences all the molding processes, cares about each individual customer and considers humanity to be an important corporate principle.

Once around the world

But the small start-up company in northern Germany has since become an internationally renowned brand with around 500 products, for which 25 employees work in Germany and numerous foreign representatives. Furniture retailers, stationery stores, household stores, gift stores, florists and shopping icons such as KaDeWe successfully sell PHILIPPI’s design products. In addition, the noble and useful everyday companions from Hamburg can be found in over 90 countries worldwide, e.g. France, Japan, the USA, Colombia, Dubai, and recently also in Moscow and Chile. Even the Museum of Modern Art in New York has PHILIPPI!

Today and tomorrow

Creativity, courage and inventiveness combined with a healthy Hanseatic merchant spirit have made the PHILIPPI brand what it is today. And those who know PHILIPPI know that it will continue to be uncompromisingly creative with its own signature and a firm eye for good design. We can hardly wait…
