Pegasus free role-playing game day 2025 – A day full of adventure and fantasy
24. March 2025 Role-Playing Game

Last Friday, we hosted the Pegasus Free Roleplaying Day (GRT), an event for roleplaying game enthusiasts that offered the opportunity to immerse themselves in the fascinating world of pen-and-paper roleplaying games. Held at our premises and organized by Pegasus Spiele, one of the leading publishers of role-playing games in Germany, the day attracted both experienced players and newcomers.

This time we chose two very special games: Catcrawl from Plotbunny Games and Root from Pegasus itself. We would like to introduce them to you in more detail here.

What is a role-playing game?

A role-playing game (often also called a pen-and-paper role-playing game if it is played on paper and without digital support) is a game in which the players take on different roles and experience a story together. The main focus is on creativity, imagination and cooperation.

In the classic pen-and-paper role-playing game, each player takes on a specific character role, which they embody in the game. The characters have certain characteristics, abilities and often also their own background story, which they develop over the course of the game. The game master (also known as the dungeon master or game master) guides the players through the world of the game, sets them challenges, gives them hints and develops the story.

What is so special about role-playing games?

Role-playing games are special because they allow players to immerse themselves in fictional worlds and create their own characters. They offer creative freedom in which players make decisions that influence the story. Collaborative storytelling and character development creates a deeper emotional connection. Role-playing games encourage imagination, collaboration and offer diverse themes from fantasy to sci-fi. Players’ decisions are often meaningful and have consequences, making each adventure unique.

What is Catcrawl about?

In this game, 1 to 4 players take on the role of a cat exploring its new home. The game can be played without a game master or solo and offers flexible session times from 30 minutes to 3 hours. It requires no preparation, you just open the booklet and start playing.

As the cat, you explore your new home room by room, while your fellow players describe the rooms to you and accompany you in your actions. The tasks rotate so that everyone gets to be the cat once. The game ends when you, as the cat, decide to take a nap in your current location.

How does the quick starter work: Krallenbühl from Root?

In the “Krallenbühl” adventure, you head into the forest to experience an adventure that will familiarize you with the basic mechanics of the game. You take on the roles of animals caught up in a conflict between different factions. The adventure is kept relatively simple, so you can get started quickly without having to familiarize yourself with the more complex rules.

It provides an excellent way to immerse yourself in the Root role-playing system and understand the basic game mechanics before embarking on larger and longer campaigns.

Catcrawl and Krallenbühl in comparison

Catcrawl and Krallenbühl are adventures with different focuses and approaches. Krallenbühl is a shorter, quick adventure specifically designed to give new players an easy introduction to the world of Root. It introduces the basic game mechanics and quickly immerses players in the action, focusing more on the factions and general atmosphere of the game.

In contrast, Catcrawl is a more in-depth adventure that allows for a more intense exploration of the world, or apartment, and offers players more opportunities for character development and interaction. While Krallenbühl serves more as a simple introduction, Catcrawl offers a more detailed and complex experience that explores the dynamics of the game in a broader way.

Our conclusion

No matter which role-playing game you choose, they give you the opportunity to immerse yourself in a different world and embody characters that you create yourself or take over from a predetermined story. You have the freedom to influence your own actions and guide the course of the game.

This mixture of freedom, creativity, collaboration and emotional depth makes role-playing games a unique and fascinating experience. They make it possible to experience and create stories that can become very real and meaningful for the participants.
