Tick, tick, BOOM! In the new cooperative board game Bomb Busters from Pegasus, you try your hand at defusing bombs as a team. If you choose the wrong wire, the charge goes off. Sounds fun? We thought so too and tested the game for you.
Game content and structure
In the box you will find many tiles with numbered blue, yellow and red cables, a game board, mission, character and equipment cards as well as various markers.
There is not much to set up, you simply follow the cables specified in the current mission and prepare them in well-mixed piles. The cables are then distributed evenly among all players. You place them in order of size on your cable holders, concealed so that your fellow players cannot see them. This is your “hand”. In the first training mission, you only play with blue cables. Later, yellow and red ones are added to make the game more challenging. The rules of the game also change as the level of difficulty increases.
Gameplay
Now it’s time to get down to business: to cut the cables, you can use either a solo or duo cut. With a solo cut, you only cut your own cables. You can do this, for example, if you have four cables with the same number on your hand.
The duo cut is trickier. You have to find out where the cable with the same number as yours is located in your opponent’s hand. Of course, you are not allowed to give each other tips. What is very easy at the beginning becomes really challenging when the yellow and red cables are also in play. If you accidentally cut a red cable, the charge goes up immediately and you have lost the game! On the other hand, you have successfully completed a mission if all the cables have been cut without the bomb detonating.
Conclusion
Bomb Busters is an amusing deduction game for two to five people that requires logical thinking but is incredibly fun to play in a group. It requires little preparation time, the rules are easy to learn and the 66 varied missions ensure long-lasting fun. We recommend Bomb Busters for clever minds aged 10 and over who enjoy the slight thrill of impending defeat when playing 😉
