Rippling rivers, rustling forests, wheat fields swaying in the wind and here and there a cute little village – this is Dorfromantik from Pegasus!
The video game from the small developer studio Toukana Interactive has been thrilling the gaming community since Early Access in March 2021 and has already won all kinds of prestigious awards.
Now Michael Palm and Lukas Zach transform the popular building strategy and puzzle game into a family game for young and old with Dorfromantik – Das Brettspiel.
Here you can find an overview of the game rules and our personal evaluation of Dorfromantik.
Game material in Dorfromantik
48x landscape tiles with forest, grain, village, river, track – on the back is a mill.
25x order tokens with forest, grain, village, river and track – on the back is a speech bubble.
25x order markers with forest, grain, village, river and track – on the front are numbers (4,5,6).
1x campaign block
1x scoring block
5x secret boxes, with additional material for free play
Special tile with the flags
There are three types of flags – green (forest), yellow (grain), red (village).
These are played like other tiles. However, you only get points for completed areas, i.e. no open edge.
Preparation
Shuffle the order tokens (reverse side with speech bubble) and place them face down on the edge of the game.
Shuffle landscape tiles (back side mill), remove 3 tiles and place the rest face down at the edge of the game.
Separate and shuffle order tiles by color, then place them face down on the edge of the game.
PS. Scoring blocks are used only at the end of the game + Boxes are opened only when prompted by the game.
Game goal in Dorfromantik
Together you create a beautiful landscape. Whereby you have to take into account the wishes of the residents. In addition, you strive to create a particularly long river and a long railroad line. Then there are special places with flags to look out for. If you do this particularly well, you will score a lot of points.
You can use these points to uncover the secret of the locked boxes. Which will give you more challenges and game materials.
Gameplay in Dorfromantik
Clockwise, the players make their move.
In your turn you have the following options:
- Reveal a land sheep (back of mill) or order (back of speech bubble) tile
- decides together where to put it – if there is no agreement, the active player decides
- Condition:
- in the first three moves only order tokens are laid out
- Order tokens are always provided with matching order marker (river, track, village, grain, forest)
- Before each move is checked:
- if there are less than 3 open orders – then 1 new order tile with marker must be revealed
- there are 3 open orders – then 1 new landscape tile is revealed
- in the first three moves only order tokens are laid out
Laying rules – the tile
Basically: At least. one edge of the tile must be placed against an already lying tile.
Special cases:
- Tracks and rivers must be continued appropriately – but multiple tracks and rivers may be started.
- The rest (forest, village, grain, meadow) can be created at will.
Fulfill orders
The order markers indicate by their numbers exactly how many tiles the area must consist of. Only then is the order considered fulfilled. An area consists of tiles that are made up of at least one edge connection.
Orders can be fulfilled immediately after laying out. Fulfilled markers are placed at the edge of the game and counted as move points at the end of the game.
Conditions:
- Order tokens can be placed on areas with already existing orders
- But – if, at the moment of the request, the area would then consist of more tiles than it is indicated on the marker, creation is forbidden or it would close the area, so that the order can no longer be fulfilled, if it would then consist of fewer tiles than necessary.
Aborting orders:
- If by placing a tile the area consists of more tiles than on the marker, the order must be canceled and the marker goes into the box
- even if you close the area so that it corresponds to fewer tiles
If there are no more orders to move, the game continues until there are no more landscape tiles.
Evaluation
After there are no more landscape tiles, the game ends and you look at your romantic little village.
Either you still manage to fulfill an order or you have to cancel one.
After that, it’s time to enter the score sheet (the small green one).
This consists of different areas:
- unlocked area – is important later when you have unlocked materials.
- Result: Indicates the sum of all points
- Date and teammate is self-explanatory
- In the crown is entered, how many games it was
- Under the symbols the number of fulfilled orders is collected according to the symbols
- Then, according to the symbols, the fulfilled flag tasks are counted, for each adjacent tile you get one point
- Then you still get points for the rivers and tracks, depending on how many tiles they consist of
After that comes the campaign sheet:
The score from the scoring sheet indicates how many points you can cross off the trail. This is in the left table (“Your results”). The crossed out points on the trail have clearance areas. As soon as you cross them, you may open the packets with the additional material, according to the instructions.
Unlocked content in Dorfromantik :
Crosses off the unlocked content in the table on the right. On top are the ones from the third box and the bottom part of the table is for the other boxes.
Everything that needs to be done is written on the unlocked cards that are in the boxes.
Among them are success cards. There are tasks on it and what you get once you have completed them.
Special tokens that can be unlocked look like landscape tokens, but they have a shield symbol on the front. Signs come in two types. These show you if you make points by a special way.
Evaluation
Rules – the rules of Dorfromantik are clear and easy to understand. In addition, the explanatory pictures help you understand very well.
As the game progresses through the unlockable materials, more rules are gradually added. So that the complexity and experience level remains balanced. The campaign mode adds an additional fun factor.
Besides, the trail, in which there are different branches, so you have to decide which materials you want to unlock, creates another interesting factor. So you can decide for yourself which challenges you want to take on. The additional game materials acquired in this way make it possible to achieve a higher score and improve the process.
Here and there you can sense that this is an adaptation of an online game.
The campaign mode in Dorfromantik definitely leaves you wanting to continue and play again.
The reward-based system gives you many hours of fun and there is always something to discover.
In Dorfromantik, true to its name, things are not hectic or stressful. It’s all about calm and serenity. Because there is no time pressure and failure is also not possible.
In particular, the possibility of solo play in Dorfromantik should be emphasized. Because whether you play alone or with several people, the rules remain the same. The only difference is that decisions are made either together or alone.
The luck factor in Dorfromantik diminishes the strategy part of the game. Because by drawing the tiles you can only pursue short and medium term strategies.
